The History of the Family Empire Walt Disney Company

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

For more than eight decades, the name Walt Disney has been widely recognized as a family entertainment icon. While starting out with a simple cartoon studio in the 1920’s, the Walt Disney Company has become an empire in the entertainment industry as it is now a global corporation. The company now provides cartoons, movies, collectables, theme parks, water parks, and has a share in or owns several TV and radio stations.

With so much on the resume, how exactly did the company get to where it is now you may ask’ It all started on October 16, 1923 when Walt Disney sold his first movie to a New York distributor titled Alice’s Wonderland. The company started as The Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, but was soon changed to Walt Disney Studios upon request of Walt’s brother and co-partner, Roy. And so the dynasty began.

Alice’s Wonderland was not a movie, but more so a series of comedies that he made for four years. After four years, he decided it was time to move on to another character. Walt Disney created a rabbit for a year called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, only to have the rights of the character stolen from him. But from there, history was made.

Walt then designed a mouse that he wanted to name Mortimer, but his wife Lilly liked Mickey better. After Walt’s chief animator, Ub Iwerks, had created two Mickey Mouse cartoons without, Walt Disney decided he wanted to make the first full sound cartoon. Prior to launching the first two cartoons, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon was launched at the Colony Theater in New York on November 18, 1928. Mickey Mouse was an instant success.

Not one to rest on ideas, the Walt Disney Company continued to make more cartoon series, winning Oscars for best cartoon for the entire decade of the 1930’s. His most well-known cartoon was released in 1933, known as The Three Little Pigs. The animated short was seen as an anthem for fighting the Great Depression and often played above the feature film.

Soon there were Mickey Mouse dolls, dishes, figurines, tooth brushes and the whole nine yards. And then history was made again as the Walt Disney Company released the first full animated feature film in Christmas time of 1937 entitled Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was a hit and became the highest grossing film of all time until Gone With the Wind.

The 1950’s brought the Mickey Mouse Club in 1955 and the premier opening of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. An era came to an end after a plethora of movie hits, the wide success of Disneyland and an overall amazing creation of family entertainment as Walt Disney died December 15, 1966. The Walt Disney Company continues to have worldwide success with hundreds of movies and cartoons under its resume, several theme parks and water parks and a family name engraved into millions of fans.

How to Cut the Costs For Your Walt Disney World Vacation

Friday, April 13th, 2007

When it comes to a good fun family vacation, there isn’t much better than Walt Disney World. With water parks, roller coasters and all of your favorite characters strolling around Disney World, it is a vacation that will leave you wanting more. It can certainly be costly to take a trip for a week to Florida, but there are things you can do to cut back on the costs. Here are 5 things to help you save money.

1. Research

Research is crucial to finding the best deals out there for your vacation to Walt Disney World. The more research you do the better chance you have of finding cheap hotel rooms, affordable airfare and reasonable transportation. Also, there are always coupons and discount prices in magazines and on the internet. Make sure to research plenty early to give yourself time to find those deals.

2. Eating accommodations

Unlike many resorts and theme parks around the world, Disney World allows you to bring your own food. This will save you from spending hundreds of dollars on hot dogs and cotton candy. If you can, eat breakfast at your hotel in the morning and then pack a lunch for the afternoon to save as much money as possible.

3. Transportation

Transportation at Walt Disney World can be cheap if you are smart about it. There are several busses that run throughout the entire day free of charge. This will help you move from one park to the next. If you plan on heading out into Florida for other entertainment as well, look into how much it will cost to rent a car. If you intend on leaving Disney World only once during the trip it may be cheaper to get a cab.

4. Off-season traveling

Like many resorts, Walt Disney World is much cheaper in the off-season. Although it gets extremely humid and hot during the summer the rates for flights and hotels will be much cheaper.

5. Souvenirs

Souvenirs are a great way to bring something back with you from the trip. However, souvenirs will cost you an arm and a leg because of the high demand. If you can, try to wait until the last day for your souvenir shopping. This will reduce the chance of you purchasing multiple items throughout the entire trip.

While an entire week at Walt Disney World will be expensive, there are certainly ways to reduce that high bill. By planning ahead and traveling in the off-season, you can enjoy yourself while saving money at the same time.
